“This really gave me the information I needed to make a very informed decision"
Often in medicine we are faced with situations where the recommendations from our doctor are overwhelming, confusing, or we do not know exactly what the risks and benefits from the treatment plan would be.
Personal Research Reports help to sort thru that data and explain the biases and basis of the recommendations. Depending on the question asked and the level of research needed the reports can be shorter or longer.
If you have a question about the benefits, risks, options for a treatment program...a Personal Research Report may be of help.
Background and rationale for doing Personal Research Reports
We are faced with a complicated and often confusing array of information when evaluating health care options.
How the recommendations of western medicine or complementary or alternative practitioners may actually relate to our own situation is very difficult to discern.
Western medicine recommendations are often based on research papers some done very well, others done poorly, and we are not always able to discern which. The research conclusions tend to report percentage of benefit of some intervention compared to a placebo or control group. These percentages are best given in absolute benefit percentages. An example: X treatment gives positive outcome in 2/100 ( 2%) of people and Y treatment (the control) shows benefit in 1/100 people ( 1 %) and thus X treatment is “ twice as good as Y… but it is actually only a 1 % absolute benefit. In other words you would have to give treatment X to 50 people to get ONE of those 50 to get the benefit that is being described.
When research studies are done by the drug company that is making the medications being studied, or by the researchers who get payment from those companies, the results are often much, much better than when that is not the case. This is sponsorship bias, only one of many ways bias can be introduced into a study.
Personal Research Reports work to analyze and evaluate the data and Dr. Dozor will review it in person with you, either in person or by phone.
