What happens in a session?
During a session the client is usually sitting in a comfortable chair in a pleasant room. The practitioner will talk with the client and use other techniques to help the client access their concerns and issues.
Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes. Usually a series of sessions is necessary. A minimum of six is typical. Often some people continue to see their therapist for several months or years. Confidentiality is respected and protected.
What changes will I notice?
Changes you may notice are often in overall wellbeing, sleep, pain, stress, anxiety, and in abilities to do normal activities during the day.
The theory of psychotherapy and counseling techniques is that our patterns of behavior, our thoughts, and often things from our past that we do not think about and may be in our unconscious, can influence, in a significant way, how we feel emotionally and physically. There is solid research that shows emotional issues, stress, past traumas, all can play a major role in our health - our symptoms, and in the process of getting better.

Visualization, somatic work (how the body actually feels) to see the relationship of physical symptoms to emotional issues.
Family Physicians also do counseling as part of their scope of practice. Often this is incorporated into the visit.
