The IMC Balance of Health

Cancer

Cancer is more and more a disease of modern life and we have made only the smallest dent into successful prevention and treatment of cancer.

Providers at IMC are sensitive to the issues around cancer and most providers work with cancer patients – from prevention strategies, risk assessment, evaluation of treatment recommendations depending on the cancer type, nutrition support, symptom support during therapy and emotional issues surrounding cancer in ourselves and our families.

The IMC Balance of Health is especially important in cancer care and in prevention.

Navigation Support or a Patient Care Conference can be especially helpful with Cancer patients.

All IMC Providers work with cancer patients.

Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer is the third greatest killer of women in the United States and certainly evokes some of the greatest fears for women. IMC stresses prevention of breast cancer by emphasizing healthy life style choices from early in a woman, and young girl’s life.

Early detection with regular examinations, appropriate use of Mammography can be important.

For women with breast cancer already detected, we support that journey with information about diagnosis, options for treatment, referral and coordination with specialists. Support during the treatment and recovery can include Nutrition, Oriental Medicine, counseling, massage and body work, and support for the family.

For some women and families it may be appropriate to consider counseling regarding the options for testing for breast cancer risk.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is increasing and not just in smokers.

Detection of lung cancer is extremely difficult.

IMC works with Lung Cancer patients in much the same way as other cancer patients.

We offer ideas of how to work with oncologists (cancer doctors) … what questions to ask… exploring what information you want to know and what you may not want to know… and the full support for patients and their families as they go through the long path of cancer treatment.

Prostate Cancer

Even though Prostate Cancer is a major killer of men, even for those diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is important to remember most men die with prostate cancer not of prostate cancer.

Screening for Prostate Cancer - whether to get a screening test with the PSA – prostate specific antigen – is controversial. The American Academy of Family Practice does NOT recommend an automatic screening test. The Academy, like other medical organizations, recommends that physicians discuss the option in depth with their patient and come to a decision together.

For patients with a high PSA or diagnosed with prostate cancer there are many issues, some controversial, to consider. Working with a general doctor,  while working with a cancer specialist, can be very helpful.

Colon Cancer

Early screening for colon cancer, especially when you have a family history of colon cancer, is important.

Some dietary choices have been shown to decrease the risk of colon cancer: folate, selenium, Vit. D.  Practitioners at IMC help you evaluate your own risk and what choices may be helpful for you.

Other Cancers

As with all cancers, healthy food choices, regular exercise and stress management are key to prevention.
